Origin Of the Name
The origin of the name Churchgate is dated back to 18th century. The name came from St. Thomas Church located half-a-kilometer away from the church gate railway station, for which the place is famous for. The term, 'gate' in Churchgate railway station owes its origin to a gate that was located on the spot where flora Fountain stands now. The gate, which formed the southern boundary of Mumbai, was later removed when the city was expanded. The term' church' and 'gate' combined together to form 'Churchgate'. As mentioned above, Churchgate is also famous for 'Churchgate railway station', which is the terminus of the western railway line and the headquarters of the western railway. The station is the starting point of numerous trains where you witness the plenty of office goers alighting here.
