Subordinate office of Ministry of External Affairs that comes under the surveillance of the Joint Secretary (CPV), who functions as Chief Passport Officer, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, New Delhi; is the Regional Passport Office of Mumbai. This office is one of the oldest offices under operation since 1954. Central Passport Organisation was previously known as Central Passport & Emigration Organisation. As of now, the employees of passport offices are governed by one body, Central Passport Organisation. There are a total of 37 passport offices in India which work under various jurisdictions. They issue or re-issue passport against the applications made by citizens ordinary residing in the territories.

The Regional Passport Office, Mumbai is distributed in two premises. One is at: 216/A, Manish Commercial Centre, Dr. Annie Besant Road, Worli, Mumbai- 400030. This is known as the old passport office. The other one is at Bengal Chemical Bhavan, Prabhadevi, Near Century Bazaar Signal; Mumbai- 400030. This one is known as the new premises of passport office. Submissions of applications for fresh and re-issuing of passport and miscellaneous services like renewal of short validity passports, Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) and Emigration Check Not Required (ECNR) endorsement, etc. are done at the new premises. Processing of the passport application is done at the old premises. This passport office serves the residents from Greater Mumbai, from Ratnagiri district Sindhudurg, Aurangabad and Beed in Maharashtra. This also caters to the people of Daman and Silvassa that otherwise come under the Union Territory of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. All these are processed in the old passport office. The new passport office facilitates "tatkal" service, wherein one can a person can obtain quick passport. Also, enquiries regarding delay in issuing, correction and delivery are taken care of here.
