National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai was established in 1996, with an intention to promote the modern trends in Indian culture. Located in Colaba in Southern Mumbai, the building was initially a concert venue, which was later made into an art gallery in 1954. The organisation, which has branches in Bangalore and New Delhi, boasts of art works from artists from India and all over the world including Gaganendranath Tagore, M.F. Hussain, F.N. Souza, Amrita Sher-Gil to Picasso and Egyptian artefacts. Moreover, National Gallery of Modern Art also conducts exhibitions incorporating Indian as well as foreign artists. National Gallery of Modern Art, is located in Sir Cowasji Jahangir Public Hall in Colaba, southern Mumbai. Managed by the Department of Culture, Government of India, it was built to promote the modern trends in arts, without demeaning the ancient Indian culture. Regarded as one of the prominent art galleries in India, it was initially a concert venue. It was in 1954 that it was converted into an art gallery, and now, this gallery has branches in Delhi and Bangalore. Conducting exhibitions on a regular basis, this exquisite art gallery boasts of having the best art works from all over the world. National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) also conducts cultural exchange programmes between various countries and showcases the talents of artists across the border.

History
Sir C. J hall, which was its initial name, was transformed into National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. However, in the sixties, the place was a venue for concerts and other art activities but, it faced a phase of decline due to misuse. Following the protest of eminent artists and sculptors such as Piloo Pochkhanawala and Kekoo Gandhy, an attempt was made to introduce a floor space along the lines of London's Royal Albert Hall and this came out to be successful. After 12 years of renovation, the art gallery could now boasts of a new exhibition space which meets international standards for lighting, humidity and temperature control. The building has five exhibition galleries, lecture auditorium, library, cafeteria, storage and office space for permanent collection and travelling shows. The strategic architecture of National Gallery of Modern Art enable a perfect view to the visitors even while keeping the art work secured.
